introduction
Paintings and Photographs.
In the history of art, there are many cases of well known painters who have created stunning photographic works in parallel with their paintings.
For example, photographs by Cy Twombly or Ellsworth Kelly.
Their photographic works are not preparations for their paintings. Instead, the photographs are successful, independent expressions as photographic works, and yet clearly show their visions of painting at the same time.
Sometimes intimate and other times isolated, the mysterious relationship between painting and photography has been fluctuating since the birth of photography.
Although each painter might have a unique reaction, in this contemporary society filled with more photos than ever, no living painters can be free from considering this relationship.
This exhibition invites contemporary painters to make photo-based artworks instead of their usual medium. These painters have never shown their photos as their own artwork in their careers.
Today, contemporary photo artists paradoxically tend to explore the nature of photography by detaching themselves from straight photographic expression.
We are anticipating that the photographs by these painters will show us fresh and different possibilities of photography.
What do their photographs look like? Can we find the essences of their paintings in their photographs? Or we will see completely different visions from their paintings?
Here, the painters shed a new light on photography.
