Introduction
AMMON KYOTO is pleased to announce an exhibition by Takuma Shiratani and Emi Sekiguchi and Dodo Kenzo
“Mikazuki: Artists who met through the Sanuki Kokubunji Dainichi Nyorai Creation Project” will be held at AMMON KYOTO from Friday, January 13, 2023.
Japanese sculptor Akio Omori, along with his studio, are currently working on the “Dainichi Nyorai Reproduction Project” to faithfully reproduce the statue of Dainichi Nyorai, which was destroyed by fire in 1486. It has been created based on the Toboki, a history of Toji temple in Kyoto and will be delivered to Sanuki Kokubun-Ji Temple in Kagawa Prefecture. This exhibition will feature works by the three artists who are in charge of sculptures for the project.

–As a continuation of the group exhibition “HINOWA” (2021) held at AMMON TOKYO by the coloring staff, the group exhibition by the sculpture staff titled “MIKAZUKI”.
The image is based on the moon ring, which means a full moon. The three of us, as inexperienced people who have not yet reached the full moon, were designated as “crescent moons”.
However, we hope to refine our individual expressions with sharpness and brilliance just like the crescent moon.

Shiratani creates stories and new perspectives by using words behind materials and motifs, Sekiguchi is inspired by the warped shape of wood to create figures of children, and in recent years has mainly created girls full of emotion, and Dodo expresses animals and fantastic beasts from his own perspective, including mythology and psychology. Please come and enjoy the world view of the three artists at the exhibition.

SHIRATANI Takuma (1994-)
1994: Born in Saga, Japan
2019: Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Sculpture
2021: Completed Master’s degree in sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts
From 2017 to the present, has been working as an assistant staff for sculptor Akio Omori at “D.B. Factory”.
Creates sculptures mainly using clay, wood, and lacquer as materials and has his works installed in public spaces after winning a competition. Tries to express his sculptures in a narrative and speculative way by using words behind the materials and motifs.
SEKIGUCHI Emi (1988-)
1988: Born in Chiba, Japan
2007: Graduated from Matsudo High School, Chiba, Japan
2011: Graduated from Tohoku University of Art & Design, Faculty of Art, Sculpture Course
2013: Completed Master degree in Sculpture, Tohoku University of Art & Design,
From October 2020 to present, has been working as an assistant staff for sculptor Akio Omori at “D.B. Factory”.
Starts carving children, mainly girls, because she could see a standing child in the warped shape of the log. Creates a scene like the wind is blowing there or someone is waiting for someone else. The figure without hands expresses the feelings of wanting to say something but not being able to.
DODO Kenzo (1998-)
1998: Born in Chiba, Japan
2022: Graduated from Musashino University of the Arts, Faculty of Art and Design, Department of Sculpture
From 2022 to present, has been working as an assistant staff for sculptor Akio Omori at “D.B. Factory”.
Creates wood sculptures mainly using camphorwood and Japanese cypress as materials. Takes real animals and phantoms as his subject matter and incorporates them into his own unique forms from various perspectives such as mythology, psychology, life, and time.
