Description
Before the lunisolar Chinese calendar had been introduced to Japan, we had an inherent custom to perceive the change of seasons and the passage of time through the movement of the sun and moon, seasonal changes of temperature as well as flowering, budding and defoliation in nature. Various habits, rites and festivals were born to be practiced to cherish a seasonal tradition and lifestyle. In the tea ceremony, decorative arrangements for the tea room as well as choices of tea utensils used are intended to evoke and enhance the association with each season, whereby the host could demonstrate his careful attention to details and hospitality towards the guests through a bowl of tea. This exhibition showcases various seasonal customs and festivals practiced from the New Year to spring distinguished as three spring months: January as early spring, February as mid spring and March as late spring in Japanese old lunar calendar. The seasonal aspects, weather, animals and plants typically evocative of spring became sources for the naming of a tea bowl. We hope that the exhibition celebrates a flourishing spring chronicled through selected works by Raku successive generations.
