Description

The Yomei Bunko Foundation in Kyoto is the treasury of the Konoe clan, the head of the five regent families (J., gosekke; along with the Kujo, Nijo, Ichijo, and Takatsukasa clans, whose members served as imperial regents and chancellors). The foundation was established in 1938 by Konoe Fumimaro (1891-1945), the twenty-ninth head of the clan and a former Prime Minister of Japan. Numbering hundreds of thousands of works, the Yomei Bunko collection comprises of early records, books, manuscripts, and artworks.
The Efflorescence of Heian Court Culture: Treasures from the Yomei Bunko Collection features eight National Treasures and sixty Important Cultural Properties–including celebrated treasures of successive generations of family heads such as the National Treasure-designated diary of Fujiwara no Michinaga (966-1027), Mido Kanpaku ki (Diary of the Regent of the Great Hall [Hojo-ji Temple]), and the Important Cultural Property-designated letter by Fujiwara no Tadamichi (1097-1164), as well as famous calligraphic works such as the National Treasures Wakansho (the Konoe edition of the Collection of Japanese and Chinese Poems). Bringing together over 140 artworks, this unprecedented major exhibition conveys the refined elegance of a thousand years of the Konoe family.
