Description
Since their beginnings, Rhizomatiks have continuously pioneered a broad spectrum of creative genres always transcending existing frameworks, employing the latest digital technologies and media spanning from web to interactive spatial design. For this exhibition Rhizomatiks have chosen “graphic design” as their theme, a realm of design encompassing numerous intuitive elements that comes about through an extremely abstract process.
With this exhibition Rhizomatiks have attempted, by clearly verbalizing that abstract process, to bring into sharp relief the creative aspect of graphic design production, an aspect long considered elusively enigmatic. To do so they exhaustively analyzed the vast bodies of poster works of four luminaries in the pantheon of Japanese graphic designers: Ikko Tanaka, Shigeo Fukuda, Kazumasa Nagai and Tadanori Yokoo. By examining their works in terms of three elements – color schemes, composition and sensitivity – and the graphics derived from those elements’ hybridization, Rhizomatiks probe for a new graphic design process unlike the conventional workflow: the “blind spot” of graphic design.
